In the evening yesterday we had cut our group in two. Twelve people for a truck safari, twelve for a boat trip. I first had the safari, but later changed to boat. Thank god for that. We saw loads of monkey, several hippos and a few crocodiles. The hippos were most amazing; they just floated there with their tiny ears above water, twice opening their wide mouths. Also saw some deer like animals, and mainly enjoyed the fact we were all alone on the big river surrounded by water, monkeys and a setting sun. it was hot though and my back had already been burned hot red. In the evening we had dinner, still great food. Somehow they managed to get the most delicious meat and rice and potatoes to the most deserted place yet. Lots of mosquitos, a failed attempt to use candlelight and heroic people trying to change or rather remove the light bulbs later, we all finished our dinner, had some riddles from Baba and headed back to the huts. Rens and I, and later Loek too, were determined to see the stars at night since we would be in the middle of nowhere without any electricity and therefor without artificial lights to cloud our view. So we set our alarm for 2:30am and went to sleep. 2:30 and power was still on. Decided to try again later but didn’t sleep until 4am when the generator stopped. Dressed and went outside to check but found a bright moon and lots of clouds. Too bad. The view we hoped for wasn’t here so maybe next night or after that.
After having slept only just a little more, we got up in the morning and got breakfast. Some omelette and bread will do me good, lots of people were (still) ill so I’m thankful that I’m not (yet/really).
