I stumbled upon this term and thought, why not? It's a normal word with not many meanings to it yet easily to discuss with various opinions. Of course, I looked it up trying to find the exact definition which appeared to be easier and simultaneously more difficult than I could have imagined. Straightforward, it means to stop living, from the Old Norse "I don't care what it was". Thorough as I am, I decided to look for a more absolute meaning and started looking up living which means being alive. Logically, dying means to stop being alive. But what exactly does being alive mean? Apparently it's living, who would have thought? Great, not only does that dictionary of mine fail to concretise the subject, it also is begging the question.
I'm sorry, but in my school they taught me to not use sophism (for all you Dutchies, "drogredenen") in my language and here it is in black and white -and blue-! It's seriously not acceptable to state that X is not Y simply because Y isn't X. What if X chooses to not only not be Y, but chooses to be Z instead. Then how does that stand in the matter of reasoning used in this ridiculous definition of the words?
Anyhow, to continue going to the depth of this, the state of being alive can also mean being not dead, which leaves dying to be to stop being not dead. And there you have it. How can one term be defined as exclusively one other term, when in the mean time that second term can mean different things, which can in their condition mean several things again. Like "dead", what can that possibly mean? Using still the very same dictionary as in the beginning, "dead" can mean several things such as "no longer alive", "numb", "displaying no emotion", "no longer relevant or important", "without activity or excitement" and last but not least "complete or absolute".
There you have it, according to the so very trusted English dictionary dying can mean to stop being not complete. To simplify this, to start being complete. Or to start displaying no emotion.
Despite the obvious physical meaning of dying which I still believe to be to start being no longer alive, this quest has given me tons of questions and answers to some questions that I initially didn't even want to see answered or even asked. The freaky part is (except of course for those do-gooders in life that claim that every single thing on earth is important) that once people consider you to be not relevant or important, you are officially declared dead. A lot of assumed to be living creatures on this planet will be said to be dead once anyone tries to see this with logic. The upside of this is of course the fact that everything -including the human being- can die and live again, as there is no limit to being changed into not important and back.
Having stated this, I will be the first one (most probably not but it still sounds nice to say (oh well at least from the ones reading this)) to declare that I am now officially a zombie, or anything like that. At least I have died and yet am alive again to write about it. After having started to display no emotion and found my reason of giving a damn about the world back which means I'm aliiiiiveee!
I will be dead again soon, as I'm currently focused on completing myself as a human being, whatever that may mean.
See you all at the next funeral,
